Landlord fined for fire safety breach

A landlord who failed to provide adequate fire safety precautions in one of his properties has been fined more than £10,000.

Eli Zohar had previously pleaded guilty to failing to comply with an Enforcement Notice issued by the Fire and Rescue Service to ensure the adequacy of fire precautions, and that he failed to effectively maintain his emergency lighting.

Tony Crook, Group Manager, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, heading up Prevention, Protection and Road Safety said: “We hope that this prosecution will ensure that the standard of his properties are kept within the requirements of the law.”

At Preston Crown Court, Mr Zohar was fined £6,000 for failure to comply with an enforcement notice and £4,500 for failure to ensure that the emergency lighting was subject to a suitable system of maintenance.

He was also ordered to pay £12,000 in costs to the fire service and a £120 victim surcharge.

Mr Zohar said: “This was a waste of taxpayers’ money and time and energy of all the parties involved.

“I showed due diligence by employing four different electricians to do all necessary maintenance.”
