Short, 21, of Derby Road, Lancaster, pleaded guilty to offences of wounding with intent and also common assault.

Preston Crown court heard that he and his former partner, Maureen Foster-Williams, were guests at Short’s sister’s wedding in July this year.

Miss Nicola Gatto, prosecuting, said the incident arose on July. A commotion began outside the main reception room in the foyer.

CCTV footage showed Short arguing with a number of guests from the wedding. One or two males and a female tried to restrain him.

Maureen Foster-Williams went and apparently tried to reason with him. The defendant was ushered into a disabled toilet and the door left open.

He was in there with his father Russell.

The defendant’s former partner then saw Short’s arm thrust out towards her.

A glass hit her on the forehead, causing her to topple over and fall backwards onto the floor. She was taken to A&E and had a six centimetre long laceration that needed 18 stitches.

X rays showed her nose was broken.

The common assault involved him punching a steward in the face a short time earlier. The man suffered pain between his eyes.

Peter Horgan, defending, said that although Short had previous convictions for violence, none of them were against ladies.

Both he and his former partner were guests at the wedding.

Judge Jonathan Gibson told Short in passing sentence that it appeared the defendant may have been aiming for somebody else during a drunken argument.

He said: “Those who use glasses in arguments such as this to cause injury, particularly of this magnitude, can always expect custodial sentences.

“You were under the influence of alcohol.”
