Internet scam alert issued

Lancashire residents are being warned to be careful online after a spate of internet-based scams in the North West in the Christmas run-up.

The county council’s trading standards service said people should be wary of bogus websites, auction websites, spam email links and insecure online payments.

Janice Hanson, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for public protection and waste, said: “Like many people, I am doing more and more business online these days and, while I’m already very careful when using the internet, I’m still grateful for trading standards’ excellent advice.

“I know people will have heard this before but I make no apologies for saying it again – if a cheap deal looks too good to be true, then it’s almost certainly a scam.

“If you do get ripped off by a dodgy website, you can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 04 05 06 for advice. Alternatively, you can refer any scams to the Action Fraud website at www.actionfraud.police.uk.”
