A GRANDMOTHER of two has branded a gang who robbed her of nearly £500 worth of jewellery given to her by her late husband as “the scum of the earth”.

Margaret Smith, 76, was riding her mobility scooter along Barley Cop Lane in Lancaster with her Jack Russell Poppy when she was approached by two women.

The pair got out of a car driven by a man, which had pulled up nearby.

They began putting jewellery chains around her neck and arms, offering them to her free of charge.

“I said to them ‘don’t be daft’ and could see it was cheap muck,” said Mrs Smith, a former nurse at the old Moor Hospital.

“I wasn’t scared but I was annoyed I could not get rid of them.”

Two of Mrs Smith’s friends then approached and it is thought the male driver of the car, believed to be a 7 series BMW, signalled to warn the women before all three escaped in the car.
