Metal thieves have targeted the property of a Lancaster businessman.

The former Oyster building on Morecambe prom has now been hit four times in three months with lead flashing stripped from the roof causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Owner Graham Cass, owner of Jo and Cass Hair and Beauty Salon, said the thefts delayed renovation of the building into seafront flats by months.

Graham said: “It’s so disheartening. The guys feel like they can’t move forward with the job without someone wrecking what they have done.

“They have broken in and smashed all new tiles off to get at the lead, causing thousands of pounds of damage for probably £100 of scrap.

“Every time they break in, it sets us back two weeks. It’s also dangerous going onto roofs in the dark. Someone will get killed.”

The most recent theft occurred on Friday night after the builders finished work at 4.40pm.

Along with the Oyster building, other buildings along Marine Road Central were targeted last April when thieves took £2,000 worth of lead flashing from the roofs.

Police have appealed for information about the theft and said they were studying CCTV footage from the time. Information can be passed to police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
