Screenwriter Debbie Oates, who was responsible for adapting the Dukes’ show A Christmas Carol this year, has also found time to pen the hour-long Coronation Street Christmas special.

Debbie has been a member of the Coronation Street writing team for 11 years but this is the first time she’s had responsibility for the Christmas Day episode and will be sitting down to watch it with her family on Wednesday.

She first met The Dukes director, Joe Sumsion, when they were at university in Bristol and she has a poignant connection with Lancaster as her late mother, Gloria Oates, was High Sheriff of Lancashire and her shield hangs in the city’s Shire Hall.
