A highly-experienced consultant rheumatologist has left his Italian job to work at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

A consultant rheumatologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.

Dr Marco Massarotti moved to Lancaster from Milan, Italy, earlier this year after taking on the role.

A highly-trained and experienced doctor within his relevant field, Dr Massarotti obtained his Medicine and Surgery Degree from The University of Milan in 1995.

Later, in 2001, he completed his training as a specialist in Rheumatology.

Before joining the Trust earlier this year, Dr Massarotti spent the last 12 years as aconsultant rheumatologist at the Humanitas Research Hospital, near Milan.

Dr Massarotti said: “I am enjoying a more relaxing pace of life. My commute is now a ten minute walk to the RLI compared to my previous hour long drive in Italy.

“Lancaster City Centre is a nice balance as it has plenty of things going on without being too big. Yet it has good transport links and I can be in Manchester in around an hours’ time.”

“Since moving to Lancaster I have been greeted by very friendly staff and patients – a world apart from the busy London based stereotype I was expecting.”
