Conference to shine spotlight on brain injury

A FIRST of its kind conference which aims to raise awareness of the reality of living with a brain injury and the support available will take place in Lancaster this week.

The Brain Injury Conference, ‘Invisibly Different’, which will also raise much needed funds for Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay, will take place at Lancaster House Hotel in Lancaster on June 17 and 18.

Supported by Birchall Blackburn Law and SJB Chambers, the conference is called Invisibly Different because often it isn’t apparent from a person’s appearance that they have a brain injury.

Dianne Yates, partner and head of serious and catastrophic injury for Birchall Blackburn Law, which has offices in Preston, said: “This is the only conference ever to be arranged by a Headway branch with a view to raising funds and lifting the veil on the reality of a head injury.

“This conference aims to highlight and raise awareness of the work which Headway Lancaster and Morecambe does as well as raise money so they can continue and expand the services they offer and the people they’re able to support.

Janet Staff, chair of Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay, added: “Delegates will experience an informative event with innovative speed networking sessions and thanks to the generosity of our core sponsors rates have been heavily subsidised opening the conference up to more than just senior staff.”

The conference will feature keynote speaker Kate Allatt, who beat Locked-in Syndrome following a catastrophic stroke.

Other guest speakers will include Headway’s network support manager Alastair White.

The two day conference, which is part of the 2016 Law Festival, aims to be informative, interactive and inclusive for those with a brain injury, their families and their carers.

Dianne added: “This is for Headway members, their families and their carers and we hope it will be a great success and the first of many events of this kind.”
