As Yorkshire prepares to host a major sporting cycling event and Scotland prepares for the Commonwealth Games, a small village in North Yorkshire prepares for its annual gala.

A firm favourite with residents and visitors alike, the annual Ingleton Gala – this year to be held on July 19 – offers a multitude of activities and displays to entertain all ages.

This year the stirring beats of the Lancaster Batala drums return and, ever popular with the sporty youth of Ingleton, Ben Slinger’s BMX biking display will take centre stage at 2.45pm.

Local lad, Ben, 20, has held British, European and World Championship titles in his Trials BMX field.

At an event held at Ingleton Primary School, Millie Steel was selected to be this year’s Gala Queen and she will be presented with her crown by 2013’s Queen, Isobel Morphet, on Gala day.

Millie will take her place in the parade on a specially decorated float alongside attendants, Ava Rollinson, Tilly-Mai Robinson, Katie Metcalf, Ellie Ramwell, Evie Angus, Lea Hird and Finley Robinson.

They are looking forward to taking part in an activity-filled day starting with the fancy dress judging at noon on Ingleton Primary School’s field.

Everyone is encouraged to enter the fancy dress and categories include Pretty, Original, Comic, Bikes and Prams, Groups and Floats.

Entry is free and there are cash prizes available for winners and places, plus free entry to the field for all participants.

Following the judging, the procession leads off at 12.15pm around the village to the Gala field.

The organisers hope that as many people as possible join in, and look forward to inventive and colourful displays along the route.

Road closures will be put in place from 12.15pm until 1pm and motorists are advised to rearrange their journey or be extra patient during this time as the parade moves along Low Demesne, Burnmoor Crescent, up Backgate and down the High Street to the Gala field.

For more information about the route and timings of the parade, motorists are advised to visit the Gala’s website, www.ingletongala.org.uk.

Runners will be gathering throughout the day for the Ingleborough Mountain races, due to set off at 3pm for Seniors and 3.15pm for Juniors.

There is a slight change to the Gala night events this year. The Gala committee will continue to hold an after Gala disco for children and ask that under 8s are accompanied by a responsible adult, and in the main Community Centre room Ingleton Football Club and Young Farmers will hold a themed Summertime Party Night for over 18s.

Tickets for all events and the grand raffle, which includes generous prizes kindly donated by local businesses, are available in advance from the community centre and local shops, on 015242 41049 or to buy on the day.

More information is provided on the Gala website, www.ingletongala.org.uk.
