A Lancaster hospice which grows its own vegetables in its grounds to provide fresh meals for patients has received a top award.
St John’s Hospice on Slyne Road has long been growing its own vegetables so kitchen staff can prepare the freshest possible home-grown meals.
The garden grows fresh lettuce, tomatoes and leeks, and everything from rhubarb to strawberries for their delicious puddings meaning that most meals cooked in the kitchen are made using home-grown produce.
The garden is maintained entirely by volunteers, whose hard work has been recognised with a Gold Award in the Incredible Edibles Awards.
The Incredible Edibles Awards aim to champion local food growing and local produce by showcasing the best food growing projects in Lancaster district.
They are run by the Lancaster District Sustainability Partnership – a local group of individuals and organisations who work together to promote sustainable activity in the area.
They won the award in the Community Projects and Allotment Sites section.
Lorraine Swanson, volunteer co-ordinator at the hospice, said: “This award reflects the commitment of this small group of hard working volunteers, and is very much deserved.
“Our thanks go to the team for their massive contribution to keeping our food costs down – keep up the fantastic work.”
