Saturday is small business Saturday, I do actively encourage constituents to use our local businesses everyday, however, as it is small business Saturday in particular please support local businesses this weekend. Here in Morecambe & Lunesdale we really do have some excellent local businesses.

As you may know, I have a farmer’s forum this gives me the opportunity to listen to the views of our local farmers.

The next farmer’s forum will take place next week, top of the agenda will be the issue of Bovine TB. If you are a constituent and you would like to attend the farmer’s forum, please contact your local NFU representative for further details.

I have tabled the following motion to encourage Lancaster City Council to sign the armed forces covenant:

“That this House notes that the Government has introduced the armed forces covenant; further notes that the armed forces covenant sets out the relationship between the nation, the state and the armed forces; further notes that councils around the UK have signed up to the armed forces covenant; further notes that Lancaster City Council has not signed up to the covenant; urges Lancaster City Council to sign up to show its support, to redress the disadvantages that the armed forces community faces in comparison to other citizens and to recognise the sacrifices that they have made; and further notes that among its benefits the covenant entitles service personnel to council tax relief, keeps the armed forces compensation scheme free from means testing and doubles the welfare grant.”

The covenant is worthy of the City Council’s support because benefits include twice doubling Council Tax Relief which now stands at nearly £600 per service person for a six-month deployment, keeping the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme payments free from being means-tested for social care purposes and the Government has launched the Community Covenant, which is supported by a £30 million Community Covenant Grant Scheme.
