The Golden Dragon restaurant in Lancaster has been there for as long as I can remember.

The last time I visited was years ago and I enjoyed it then so I was keen to see if it still passed muster.

We went on a Saturday night and were lucky to get a table as it was packed.

The extensive menu was impressive but we decided on a set meal for two at a cost of £50.

The friendly waitress duly brought out our mixed hors d’oeuvres first which included salt and peppered ribs, spring rolls, sesame prawn toasts, crispy seaweed, sweet and sour won tons, all with a sweet and sour sauce.

Both of us enjoyed this course immensely, the food was piping hot and tasty. The ribs were my favourite, with plenty of meat on the bone and a hint of chilli to spice things up.

After clearing the plate, we were given a hot towel to wipe our hands with, which was a nice touch.

After a short wait, the quarter aromatic crispy duck, served with pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce was brought to the table.

The duck was succulent yet still crispy, and was perfectly accompanied by the cucumber, spring onion and sauce.

Next in this mammoth feast was chicken and sweetcorn soup, which was in the traditional blue and white bowls with a small ladle type spoon.

The soup was flavoursome, piping hot and full of chicken pieces - delicious.

I was already getting full but had to make room for the main courses. We had egg fried rice, sweet and sour prawns in crispy batter, a sizzling special and a crispy beef in cantonese sauce.

The restaurant certainly didn’t skimp on the portions and we both agreed the time we had to wait between courses was minimal.

My favourite main was the sweet and sour prawns in crispy batter, the batter was light not heavy, and the juicy prawns filled my mouth with flavour and juices.

The sizzling special had mixed meat including pork, chicken, beef and had a ginger and spring onion sauce.

Again, this was piping hot and tasty.

The crispy beef in cantonese sauce was crunchy and the beef was tender inside but as we were filling up rapidly, we were unable to eat much of this. The egg fried rice was light and fluffy and there was plenty of it. I had to ask for a doggy bag to take the crispy beef with us because we were too full to finish it off.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was lively, there were plenty of parties enjoying a night out and plenty of couples as well.

Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, however some were a bit rude – one waitress nearly pushed me on to a table in her rush to get past me to a customer.

On the whole we were impressed with The Golden Dragon. The decor inside was typical of a Chinese restaurant but the surroundings were pleasant and colours muted.

Twenty-five pounds each for a four course Chinese meal might sound a lot but there was a lot of food which was well cooked, well presented and of good quality.

I would visit the restaurant again but maybe Saturday night is not ideal if you want a romantic meal for two in peace and quiet.

The Golden Dragon gets a big thumbs up from me.
