As I write this week’s column I am preparing my speech for the debate that I have tabled in Westminster Hall which is titled “Changes to policy following the Morecambe Bay cockle pickers’ disaster.”

The debate will take place at 4.30pm on Wednesday, January 29.

Over the weekend I held street surgeries in Halton and Silverdale, it was nice to meet so many people and to discuss such a wide range of issues.

I will be carrying out more street surgeries over the coming months and will inform you through this column where and when they will be.

A few years ago, I helped one of our local PCSO’s John Brayshaw with an initiative he had to install CCTV cameras in the White Lund Industrial Estate.

John collected £16,000 from 42 businesses on White Lund to fund the installation of the CCTV system. I was informed on Friday that as a result crime has fallen by 50 per cent.

I of course welcome this reduction it really is excellent news.

Also, the images are assisting the Police when criminal cases come to court due to the clarity the CCTV can deliver which really is superb.

The cameras were installed by local CCTV company Bowker and there are plans to expand the project by installing more cameras and establishing a central control room, this really is a fine example of the Police and community working together to reduce crime.

I have been pleased to see that construction of the Heysham M6 Link Road has started, I will be monitoring the building work closely and talking on a regular basis to the County Council and the building contractor.

Over the last week, I have heard of one business that plans to open a new office on White Lund an example of the investment that the link road is already bringing to the area.

My next advice surgery is on Friday, February 7, if you would like to book an appointment please contact my office for more details, my telephone number is 01524 841225.
