A team of celebrities beat a Heysham Power Station team in a thrilling charity football match at the weekend.

The stars – which included Chris Fountain, who plays Tommy Duckworth in Coronation Street, and Rhodri Giggs, brother of Manchester United’s Ryan – won 4-3 thanks to a winner in the dying minutes of the game.

The eighth annual event, held on Sunday at the Globe Arena courtesy of Morecambe FC, raised money for Marie Curie, Cancercare and the Guardian’s Twins Appeal.

Cancercare also raused £600 extra through their own fundraising on the day.

Around 1,200 people turned out to enjoy the match in glorious sunshine.

Organiser Mike Grimmitt, of Heysham Power Station, said: “Thanks very much to Morecambe FC for allowing us to use the ground for free.

“It was a great day and we know the three charities are going to benefit from the event.”
