Caton Road is due to close this weekend as part of Heysham Link Road works.
Drivers who use Caton Road (A683) east of the M6 and junction 34 at Lancaster are being advised of a full road closure between 8pm tonight, Friday June 26 and 6am Monday June 29.
A section of the road will need to close to enable works to continue on the new Bulk Green junction that connects Caton Road to the southbound sliproads of the M6.
Engineers will close Caton Road from southbound traffic lights east to Denny Beck.
Although diversion signs will be erected, drivers are being advised familiarise themselves with alternative routes and plan their journeys ahead.
A spokesman for link road builders Costain said: “Smaller vehicles such as cars, vans, tractors, motorcycles etc can use Low Road, Halton Road and the A6 from the Crook O’Lune to avoid the lengthy diversion; however this route cannot be signposted.”
The official diversion which needs to accommodate for heavy good vehicles is almost 16 miles and will be sign-posted as follows.
Traffic from Lancaster bound for Caton will be diverted south on the M6 at junction 34 and exit at junction 33.
Head south on the A6 at the roundabout then take immediate left onto Hampson Lane.
Turn right onto Stoney Lane, then left onto Bay Horse Road. Continue on Bay Horse Road which leads into Rigg Lane, Postern Gate Road and eventually Quernmore Road before it re-joins Caton Road (A683) near the Crook O’Lune.
Traffic from Caton bound for Lancaster will take the same route in reverse, turning left off Caton Road onto Quernmore Road, continue along Postern Gate Road into Rigg Lane and eventually Bay Horse Road at the end turn right onto Stoney Lane, and take the first left onto Hampson Lane (over the M6), turn right heading north on the A6 and then join the M6 heading north. Exit at junction 34 (Lancaster) and re-join Caton Road (A683).
Northbound motorway traffic heading for Caton will be advised to exit at junction 33 (Galgate) and pick up diversion.
Southbound motorway traffic heading for Caton (from junction 35) will be advised remain on the M6 exit at junction 33 (Galgate) and pick up diversion.
