Two businesses to shut up shop
Owner of The Greengrocer, Peter Hale, outside the shop on Common Garden Street, which is closing down after 19 years.
A LANCASTER greengrocer is calling it a day after 19 years selling fruit and vegetables in the city.
Peter Hale, 64, who owns The Greengrocer in Common Garden Street, will close his shop on Saturday and has put the building up for sale.
The former engineer, originally from St Helens but now living near Cockermouth, Cumbria, said it was “time for some me-time”.
He said: “I’m retiring because I’ve had bad health since June last year. I’ve been working for 49 years and I’ve been a greengrocer since 1972.”
Peter started out full time as a greengrocer in King Street in 1993 on a short-term lease, and then moved to Common Garden Street a year later.
He added: “I don’t consider my customers to be just customers, I consider a lot of them to be friends. I’m not selling to anyone who wants it for student accommodation. At this moment in time it’s being sold for retail. If there’s anyone who wants to start up a greengrocers in Lancaster, I’d be more than happy to offer advice.”
Another longstanding city shop, Sevenoaks Sound and Vision, which has been trading from Penny Street since 1984, is up for sale and will be closing before Easter, with the loss of two jobs.
