If you were out and about in Lancaster at the weekend, chances are it felt a bit like Big Brother was watching you.

Scores of CCTV cameras appeared on the city’s roads and pavements, attached to trees, traffic lights and street lights, pointing in every direction.

Speculation grew as to what the cameras were being used for, but motorists and pedestrians may now feel safe in the knowledge that nothing sinister was going on.

The cameras had been installed on behalf of British Land, the new developers for the canal corridor north scheme.

The company was surveying traffic and pedestrian flows in the city centre, in order to inform a future planning application for development, expected in the next 12 to 18 months.

Steve Bryson, speaking on behalf of British Land, said that the cameras were installed on Friday and removed on Saturday night.

He added: “We needed to collect up to date traffic data before United Utilities started working in the city.

“The job is now done, and we will be submitting the information as part of the planning application.”

Lancashire County Council said it had been informed about the work, and that the cameras were also collecting pedestrian movements around the city centre.
