It’s official – Lancaster has the best fish and chip shop in the north west.

Hodgson’s Chippy has been crowned the best in the region in the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards organised by Seafish.

Hodgson’s on Prospect Street will now fry for glory against nine other regional winners, one from each judging region in the UK, as they vie for the ultimate title - the best fish and chip shop in the UK.

Hodgson’s last won the best in Britain title in 2005.

Owner Nigel Hodgson said: “Winning this award category in 2005 was an amazing experience, so much so that 11 years later we’re hoping for another win.

“Being in the top 10 is an amazing achievement.”

The nine other finalists are Cromars in St Andrews, Fife, Hikary’s Fish Bar in Neath, Port Talbot, The Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Mister C’s in Selby, North Yorkshire, Simpsons Fish & Chips in Cheltenham, The Cod’s Scallops in Nottingham, Papa’s Barn in Ditton, Kent, Cox’s of Letchworth, Hertfordshire and Kingfisher Fish & Chips in Plympton, Plymouth.

The hopefuls will now put their presentation skills to the test at a final judging round on January 19 2016.

The awards ceremony will take place at the Lancaster London Hotel on January 20.
