Jane Richardson is managing director at Lancaster gift shop and gallery, Arteria with Gallery 23, in Brock Street.
1. What was your first job?
Other than pocket money chores, my first proper job was working on the bar at the Bay Horse Inn, Forton. Being a family business I quickly learnt the importance of team work and I soon got the hang of pulling a good pint!
2. How do you relax after a hard day’s work?
After spending some quality time with my daughter before bedtime, I love nothing more on a warm evening than sitting out at the top of our garden with a glass of chilled white wine and enjoying the peace and quiet.
3. Proudest moment in business?
Arteria’s 10th birthday celebrations earlier this year. It was brilliant to reflect on what has been achieved in 10 years, and wonderful to hear the encouraging good wishes from our customers, it confirmed to me how fortunate we are to have such a lovely + loyal customer base.
Also up there would be winning ‘Business Woman of the Year in 2008’.
4. Most embarrassing moment at work?
One Sunday when we were changing the gallery exhibition, the clocks had changed the night before; I had got completely mixed up and turned up at the shop at 6am, two hours early! At least I wasn’t late that day!
5. What is your biggest vice?
Being able to switch off; a busy family life and having a business means life is non stop. I really have to force myself to sit down at the end of the day.
6. Who is the biggest influence on your life?
My parents. I have great admiration for both of my parents. They have guided and encouraged me through all aspects of life and have taught me the valuable lesson that if you work hard enough anything is achievable.
7. Word of business advice?
Strive for perfection; if you come somewhere near you are on the right track.
