The M6 south of junction 35 Carnforth.

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 21 March but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Crewe to Junction 19 Knutsford

Sections of the hard shoulder on the M6 between Crewe and Knutsford will be closed while drainage, structural and other surveys are carried out. Some lane closures will also been needed overnight, although the motorway will remain open at all times. The scheme is due to be completed by Friday 2 May.

M6 Junctions 20 to 21 Thelwall Viaduct

A scheme is taking place to replace expansion joints along the Thelwall Viaduct. There will be some overnight closures to install a contraflow system, which will help keep four lanes in each direction of the motorway while the work is carried out. When one of the bridges is being worked on, three lanes will run almost normally but with the fourth lane switched onto the opposite carriageway. All of the lanes will be narrowed during the work, with a 40mph speed limit in place.

M6 Junctions 32 Broughton to 33 Lancaster

Work to repair a motorway bridge along the northbound side of the M6, north of Preston, will take place from Sunday 23 March. The work on the bridge, which carries the M6 over Whittingham Lane at Broughton, will involve at least three overnight closures of the northbound M6 between junctions 32 and 33, as well as two full weekend closures of the link road from the eastbound M55 onto the northbound M6. The overnight closures of the northbound carriageway will take place between 10pm and 6am on Sunday 23, Friday 28 and Sunday 30 March. The two weekend closures of the eastbound link road will take place between 10pm on Friday 21 March and 6am on Monday 24 March, and between 10pm on Friday 28 March and 6am on Monday 31 March. During the closures, clearly-signed diversions will be in place:

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by April 2014.

M6 Junctions 41 Wigton to 42 Carlisle

Work is taking place to replace road markings and reflective road studs on the M6 between Wigton and Carlisle and is due to be completed by the end of the month. All the work will be done overnight – between 8pm and 6am each night - along short sections of the carriageway. One overnight closure of the northbound exit slip road at junction 42 will be required on Friday 28 March, with a diversion in place.. A full overnight closure of the northbound carriageway at junction 41 will also be required from 8pm on Saturday 5 April until 6am on Sunday 6 April. Drivers will need to leave the motorway on the exit slip road and re-join it from the entry slip road.

M56 Junctions 8 Altrincham to 9 Lymm

A project is taking place to install a new concrete safety barrier along a half-a-mile section of the M56. Drainage improvements and resurfacing work will also be carried out, and the scheme is due to be completed by Friday 16 May. The motorway will remain open at all times but with a lane three closure throughout the project. Lane two of the carriageway in each direction will also close overnight throughout the project. Drivers will be able to use the hard shoulder as a running lane throughout the work, and a 50mph speed limit will be in place.

M60 Junctions 25 Bredbury to 27 Stockport

A major resurfacing scheme is being carried out along the M60 around Stockport, with work on the clockwise carriageway taking place until Saturday 29 March. The road will be closed overnight between 10pm and 5am on weekdays, and between 10pm and 7am at weekends. A clearly-signed diversion will be in place during the closures.

A project to resurface a half-mile section of the A66, west of Keswick, will start on Monday 24 March and is due to be completed by Sunday 30 March. The week’s work will be taking place between Braithwaite and Portinscale, and will include resurfacing, new road markings and reflective road studs. Most of the work will be carried out overnight, between 8pm and 6am, and temporary traffic lights will be in place along with a 40mph speed limit.

A66 Brough

Resurfacing work is taking place on parts of the westbound side of the A66 dual carriageway around Brough. All the work is taking place between 8pm and 6am each night to minimise inconvenience to road users, with a 40mph speed limit past the roadworks.

However, full closures of the eastbound carriageway will be needed overnight between 8pm and 6am on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March.
