Planned roadworks in the North West

Planned roadworks in the North West: Weekly summary for Monday 3 – Sunday 9 March 2014.

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 28 February but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Crewe to Junction 19 Knutsford

Sections of the hard shoulder on the M6 between Crewe and Knutsford will be closed while drainage, structural and other surveys are carried out. Some lane closures will also been needed overnight, although the motorway will remain open at all times. The scheme is due to be completed by Friday 2 May.

M6 Junctions 20 to 21 Thelwall Viaduct

A scheme is taking place to replace expansion joints along the Thelwall Viaduct. There will be some overnight closures to install a contraflow system, which will help keep four lanes in each direction of the motorway while the work is carried out. When one of the bridges is being worked on, three lanes will run almost normally but with the fourth lane switched onto the opposite carriageway. All of the lanes will be narrowed during the work, with a 40mph speed limit in place. The project is due to be completed in May.

M6 Junction 26 Orrell

Overnight drilling work is taking place by the M6 at Orrell ahead of a major project to reduce congestion and improve safety at the junction. Three temporary drilling rigs have been set up by junction 26 of the M6, which links the motorway to the M58 and the A577, while tests are carried out on the former mining area. The project began on Monday 17 February and is expected to last for up to three weeks. The southbound entry and exit slip roads to be closed from 10pm until 5am each night. The roundabout by the slip roads – to the east of the motorway – will also be closed overnight, preventing access to the M58 and A577. Clearly signed diversions will be in place.

M6 Junction 33 Lancaster

Work is taking place to install four of the latest giant electronic message signs near Junction 33 of the M6. The signs will give drivers better warnings of incidents and other information about the motorway such as weather conditions. New CCTV cameras will also be mounted on the signs – allowing the Highways Agency to monitor and manage motorway incidents more effectively. The work should be completed by Friday 14 March. Lane one of the motorway is likely to be closed around the clock in both directions while the work takes place, and some overnight closures of lane two will also be necessary.

M6 Junction 36 Kirkby Lonsdale

There will be night time closures of the northbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 36 of the M6 for resurfacing work between 8pm and 6am at weekends until Monday 3 March.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by April 2014.

A66 Brough

Resurfacing work is taking place on parts of the westbound side of the A66 dual carriageway around Brough. All the work is taking place between 8pm and 6am each night to minimise inconvenience to road users, with a 40mph speed limit past the roadworks.

A66 Braithwaite to Portinscale

Temporary traffic lights will be in place for drainage work until Tuesday 25 March.

A66 Stainburn

Temporary traffic lights will operate on the Stainburn bypass until Friday 14 March while survey work is carried out.

A66 North Stainmore

A project to resurface a mile-long section of the eastbound A66 around North Stainmore is due to start on Sunday 9 March. The project, between Barras and the border with County Durham, should be completed by the end of the month, subject to weather conditions. The carriageway will be kept open most of the time with lane closures for the resurfacing work. However, full closures of the eastbound carriageway will be needed overnight between 8pm and 6am on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 March and Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March.

A66 Greta Viaduct, Keswick

Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be in place until 30 March while work is carried out to Greta Viaduct in Keswick.

A590 Dalton-in-Furness

There will be temporary traffic lights and lane closures on the A590 between the A595 Askam Road roundabout and the Park Road roundabout for drainage and refurbishment work. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of March.

A590 Newby Bridge

One lane will be closed for maintenance work on at the A590 at Newby Bridge, with temporary traffic lights, from 9.30am until 4.30pm. The work is due to be completed by Tuesday 11 March.

A590 Levens

Work is taking place to improve the drainage on a mile and a half section of the A590 dual carriageway between Sampool Bridge and Church Road. The scheme is due to be completed by Sunday 23 March and is taking place between 7am and 7pm each day, with single lane closures in place to minimise disruption to road users.

A590 Newlands Garage

There will be daytime traffic signals for reconstruction of a boundary stone wall and footpath patching work. The scheme will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm until Friday 7 March.

A595 Whitehaven

A project to upgrade street lights along the A595, south of Whitehaven, will get underway on Monday 3 March, and should be completed by the end of the month. All the work will be taking place between 9.30am and 3.30pm to minimise inconvenience to road users, and temporary traffic signals will be in place.
