Planned roadworks in the North West: Weekly summary for Monday 17 – Sunday 23 February 2014

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 14 February but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 16 Crewe to Junction 19 Knutsford

Sections of the hard shoulder on the M6 between Crewe and Knutsford will be closed from Monday 10 February while drainage, structural and other surveys are carried out. Some lane closures will also been needed overnight, although the motorway will remain open at all times. The scheme is due to be completed by Friday 2 May.

M6 Junction 26 Orrell

Drilling will take place by the M6 at Orrell from Monday 17 February ahead of a major project to reduce congestion and improve safety at the junction. Three temporary drilling rigs will be set up by junction 26 of the M6, which links the motorway to the M58 and the A577, as tests are carried out on the former mining area.

The project, which is expected to last for up to three weeks, will require the southbound entry and exit slip roads to be closed from 10pm until 5am each night. The roundabout by the slip roads – to the east of the motorway – will also be closed, preventing access to the M58 and A577. The work is taking place overnight to minimise disruption and there will be no impact on the main motorway carriageways, although there will be some noise from the rigs. Clearly signed diversions will be in place.

M6 Junction 33 Lancaster

Work is taking place to install four of the latest giant electronic message signs near Junction 33 of the M6. The signs will give drivers better warnings of incidents and other information about the motorway such as weather conditions. New CCTV cameras will also be mounted on the signs – allowing the Highways Agency to monitor and manage motorway incidents more effectively. The work should be completed by Friday 14 March. Lane one of the motorway is likely to be closed around the clock in both directions while the work takes place, and some overnight closures of lane two will also be necessary.

M6 Junction 34 Lancaster

A project to resurface sections of the M6 around Junction 34 at Lancaster will begin on Monday 10 February, with road markings and reflective road studs also being replaced. Both the northbound and southbound carriageways will benefit from the work which is taking place between 8pm and 6am each night, and is due to be completed in early March. The motorway will remain open at all times, with some lane closures and a 50mph speed limit in place. The northbound exit slip road will be closed overnight on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 February, and the southbound entry slip road will close overnight on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 February.

M6 Junction 35 Carnforth to 36 Kirkby Lonsdale

Resurfacing work is being carried out on a three-mile section of the northbound M6 near Burton Services until Tuesday 18 February. The carriageway will remain open at all times and the majority of the work is being done overnight, with some lane closures required. The Services will also remain open at all times and a 50mph speed limit will be in place.

M6 Junction 36 NB Exit and Entry slips

There will be night time closures of the northbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 26 of the M6 for resurfacing works between the hours of 8.00pm and 6.00am at weekends from Friday 21 February to Monday 3 March.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by April 2014.

A590 / A5092 Greenodd

Work is taking place to build a new roundabout linking the A590 to the A5092 at Greenodd, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving safety. The project is due to be completed later this month.

A590 Dalton-in-Furness

There will be temporary traffic lights and lane closures on the A590 between the A595 Askam Road roundabout and the Park Road roundabout for drainage and refurbishment work. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of March.

A590 Newby Bridge

One lane will be closed for maintenance work on at the A590 at Newby Bridge, with temporary traffic lights, from 9.30am until 4.30pm. The work is taking place between Monday 10 February and Friday 7 March.

A590 Newlands Garage Footway
