The future looks bright for a Lancaster business couple who can now boast having the nation’s best smoothie.

Juicafe, in Market Square, was crowned king in the British Smoothie Championships last week, finally putting the north of England on the map and beating off stiff competition from London based independents and national chains.

Owners Oli and Indie Wilson-Fish, said it “felt wonderful” to have won.

Indie, 33, originally from Kent and Oli, 35, from Cumbria, opened their business eight years ago and employ 10 members of staff.

Indie said: “We opened Juicafe because we felt there was a need for a place that can deliver amazing quality coffees, which we have in our Atkinsons range, and amazing cold drinks, all in one place.”

Oli is a former manager for Birmingham based Mitchells and Butlers Pub Company, and Indie was an assistant manager for Costa Coffee.

Indie said: “It feels wonderful to have won. It feels like all the dedication and passion that our team has displayed has been rewarded.

“We’ve been in the top three of the British Smoothie Championships for the last seven years, so this year has been the year for us.

“The criteria is based on flair, presentation, taste, texture, and innovation and our winning smoothie is called Lucuma Matata - it means ‘no worries’, and it is really healthy and high in anti-oxidants.

“It’s an original creation, they have to be to get into the top 12 and it contains Lucuma (a subtropical fruit native to the Andean valleys of Peru), passion fruit, mango, banana, carrot and apple, and, yes, it will be on sale in the shop from next week.”

“Every other year, apart from the first, the competition has been won by either a London firm or a big chain, so it’s been great to represent the north of England.”

The couple have two children - Alexis, six, and Ethan, three, and live in Lancaster. Indie added: “Because of our jobs, wherever we went we wanted to see drinks served at a really high standard, which we think we can now safely say we provide.

The future for Juicafe is very bright.

“We have already launched a mobile unit called The Smoothie Truck, available to hire for events. We are looking to make improvements to the Lancaster store and without compromising our integrity or quality we are hoping to expand further.”

The British Smooth Championship finals were held at the Design Centre in Islington, London, last week.
