A LANCASTER woman has cooked up a storm after making it to the finals of the MasterChef TV show.

Rachel Banks, 40, got through to the final 24 and competed in the heats, shown recently on BBC1.

Sadly, she fell at the first hurdle, but Rachel now sees her experience as a potential stepping stone to a new career in catering.

Rachel, who lives in Bowerham, said being made redundant from her job in forensic science last year gave her the impetus to enter MasterChef.

“I just thought ‘what the hell, I’ll do something a bit crazy,’” she said.

“I filled out an application form and then forgot about it until they contacted.”

Rachel was invited to an audition in Manchester, and, from there, went to a ‘blind tasting’ session with presenters John Torode and Gregg Wallace in London.

She then received a call to say she had made it to the last 24 and would be appearing on the show – which was shown on BBC1 last month.

Rachel, who is a keen member of Bowerham Allotment Society, cooked a pork joint stuffed with dates and apples.

“It was very exciting,” Rachel said. “It was a long day but the team was brilliant.”
