Ingleton Post Office is to close, bosses said today.
The High Street branch will shut from next Monday, January 27.
Rumours had been circulating in recent weeks about its future.
The branch is run by Ian and Sharon Newbold. Mrs Newbold declined to comment when contacted by the Guardian.
Although it is hoped someone local might add Post Office services to their business, news of the closure has been described as ‘the death of the village’ on social media.
In a statement, a Post Office spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Ingleton Post Office from Monday 27 January, following the withdrawal of premises for Post Office use.
“We would like to reassure customers that we are already working hard to find a way restore the service to the community and are committed to maintaining services in the area.
“The search is on, and any retailer or small business owner interested in running the Post Office and incorporating it into their business should ring 0845 601 6260 and talk to an advisor.”
Customers are advised to use Post Office branches in High Street, Burton-in-Lonsdale, Main Street in Bentham and Clapham Village Store after the closure.
