Group’s big share of the cake

JUST like its young attendees, a baby group with a difference has grown fast since it started in Lancaster in 2009.
The GuGu (Grown-Ups and Growing-Ups) group meets every Tuesday in term time at King’s Community Church in Phoenix Street, and has seen a 10-fold increase in attendance since it was set up.
From humble beginnings of just five members, around 50 adults and 60 children attend the group between 10am and 11.30pm, perhaps enticed along by free cake, prompting some parents to rename it “cake club”. Parent and member of King’s Community Church, Steve Smith, said: “Along with the usual mums, there are some regular dads, grandparents and other carers in attendance.
“Although it’s held in the church building – the recently-renovated King’s Own Royal Border Regiment TA drill hall – the group is run for members of the public.”
