Gel firm throws rivals a googly

A local entrepreneur behind one of the UK’s fastest growing hair styling brands has signed up England cricket star Jimmy Anderson to help promote his range of gels.

The Lancashire paceman, who is preparing to terrorise Australian batsman in this summer’s Ashes series, is Hairbond’s first ambassador.

Scott Michaels, 31, who co-owns the Cutting Room on Penny Street, said he was “chuffed” to have Anderson’s backing, which came after he posted some of his firm’s products to the cricketer’s agent.

“It’s great for us,” said former Carnforth High School pupil Scott, who lives in Slyne.

“Jimmy is a really good guy and he has already been promoting our products in the England camp.

“He fits the bill in terms of what we are trying to do because he has quite a clean-cut image.

“Getting Jimmy on board is a huge statement to where we are heading with the brand as there is only one objective: being the best

Anderson, who is England’s all time highest international wicket-taker, joined Scott for a photoshoot at the Gladstone hair salon near Stalybridge to announce his signing.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to working with Scott and his team at Hairbond.

“I’m a fan of the products and excited to be involved in a British company growing so successfully.”

Since Scott set up the company in 2008, Hairbond has grown from nothing to being stocked in 500 independent UK hair salons.

It is now exporting to more than 20 international distributors including USA, Australia and Singapore.

Turnover has soared from £30,000 in the first year to £250,000 and rising.

Anderson is the latest in a long line of celebrities to have endorsed the brand.

There are six products in the range, and Scott is also now preparing to launch a new mass market brand called Jack The Lad.

The gels are made in Morecambe and Leek in Staffordshire.
