A popular Lancaster restaurant has shut without warning.

The Gatehouse Restaurant (pictured above), which opened on the canalside at The White Cross over 10 years ago, closed suddenly last week. A sign on the door simply read: ‘Sorry we are now closed.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your support over the years.’

Some customers who had booked a table at the restaurant turned up last week to find the doors closed.

Others had gift vouchers that they still had to use there.

It is not known why the licensee, Nicholas Bailey, closed the restaurant. Mr Bailey was unavailable for comment as the Lancaster Guardian went to press and it is not clear when or if the restaurant will re-open.

The Gatehouse was ranked number 52 out of 114 restaurants in Lancaster on Trip Advisor. It was given a glowing review by the Guardian last week.
