Flashmob singers take over Lancaster shopping centre

LANCASTER shoppers were given a bit of Christmas cheer on Saturday when a huge crowd of singers converged on Marketgate Shopping Centre.

The “flash mob” took over part of the mall to sing the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.

After a few opening bars from solo soprano Alex Jordinson, and to the accompaniment of a backing track pre-recorded by local musicians, more than 500 singers – including 30 choirs from around the district and further afield – burst into song.

The big sing, along the lines of countless similar events around the world, was brought together by Andy Plowman, a local organist known to many of the choirs.
