An independent Lancaster card shop has won a top industry award.

Paper Gallery won the Best Independent Greetings Card Retailer Award for the North and Northern Ireland at the 2012 Reta awards.

The Market Street shop beat off competition from four other retailers at an awards ceremony at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

The Retas, now in their eighth year, celebrate independent and multiple greeting card retailers regionally and nationally.

Owner Mike Baxter said he was delighted to win the award.

He said: “We are all very happy. It was a great do at the Dorchester as well. To get an award from Retas, the biggest awards in card retail, was excellent.

“We were nominated by a rep’ and after the organisers of the award asked around we were shortlisted to the final five.

“It was a shock to be nominated and an even bigger shock when it was announced we had won.

“The decision was reached on the basis of asking card publishers and agents who they would support.”

Paper Gallery opened in 1980 as a gallery which sold picture frames but branched out to specialise in greetings cards five years later.
