Lancaster’s MP and mayor met with a delegation from HMS Lancaster in Parliament during the ship’s layover in Canary Wharf, London, this week.

Eric Ollerenshaw, MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood, and Coun Sheila Denwood, the city’s mayor, met some of the crew, among them able seaman and Lancaster man James Duffy, before the ship deploys in late-May for the core Caribbean’s hurricane season.

Its task will be to ensure the security of the UK’s overseas territories in the Caribbean and provide initial relief in the event of a hurricane.

HMS Lancaster will also be working with the US Coast Guard to counter the smuggling of narcotics and build capacity in countries trying to build maritime capability.

The ship will visit 20 ports of call whilst conducting Atlantic Patrol Task (North), reinforcing the UK governments commitment to the UK’s Caribbean overseas territories and the wider region before returning in mid-December.

Mr Ollerenshaw said: “It was great to meet with the crew and to thank them on mine and your behalf for all they do for our country. I wished them well on their next posting to the Caribbean. It was a particular pleasure to meet and thank James on behalf of Lancaster.
