Brewery set to call time at historic city pub
The Greaves Hotel in Scotforth, Lancaster.
PLANS are set to be unveiled next month that could see a Lancaster pub turned into retirement homes.
McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd are to hold a public exhibition to display early proposals for the redevelopment of the Greaves Hotel in Greaves Road.
The scheme would provide “Extra Care” accommodation for the elderly, which combines independent living with the level of care that residents need during the remainder of their lives.
Jonathan Barker, one of the managing directors of Mitchell’s, who own the Greaves Hotel, said the proposals were “testing the water” for a possible future use for the site.
The building has been a pub since the early 1900s, but is no longer ‘fit for purpose’, he said.
“We have been in discussions with McCarthy & Stone for a number of months about the site,” Mr Barker said.

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 03:55 PMIt's a shame if this is going to be adding to an already cramped residential area. But I would say that Mitchell's are just doing the best they can in this current economic climate the same as the rest of us, in a particular industry which has been struggling for a while now. And I don't understand the opinion that pubs owe people something, the people of Lancaster and their ancestors also lined many other shops and businesses pockets which have since sold out etc. The Greaves is dated and crap anyway :)

Monday, January 30, 2012 at 12:12 PMThe developers McCarthy and Stone want to build FOUR STOREY retirement flats as high as the Greaves Hotel and adjoining it, creating a walled in corridor along the A6 and completely blocking in the area. THIS DEVELOPMENT IS TOO INTRUSIVE AND MUST BE LOWERED OR ELSE PREVENTED. What little view people have walking down Belle vue Terrace will be gone forever. People behind the development on Ash Grove will have a towering monstrosity overlooking them, infringing their privacy and blocking light. And what about car parking ? the developer wants 50 units and proposes just 18 car park spaces. Local residents will have to cope with the overspill. An existing McCarthy and Stone site in Morecambe has a sign advising occupants of their flats to use nearby streets to park on, so it's local peope who have to be inconvenienced so these developers can make a profit. Make your views known at the public meeting to talk to the developers at the Greaves Hotel from 3pm until 7pm on Feb 7th.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10:52 AMStubcrouch: Right on the money. They have had twenty years to change the the city's pubs into more useful buildings whether it be hotel's or even office buildings. But no, they have really left it all too late and there is no sorrow for them.

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 06:37 PMI don't know why anyone gives Mitchell's the time of day. They have little loyalty to the town that built them (effectively) and seem quite happy to p*** all over it. From leaving the Victoria in the Marsh boarded up, to the criminal closing - and even more destructive and ignorantdangerous demolition of The Elms - to not pulling their finger out on their own brewery site and getting it redeveloped in the good times rather than leave it as an eyesore that no one wants in the bad. They don't give a stuff about Lancaster really.
