Bentham Railway Station’s Yorkshire location did not stop it from winning the Community Rail Lancashire Station of the Year Award recently.
It’s position on the Leeds to Morecambe Community Rail Partnership, which links the two counties, entitled it to be entered in the competition, where it shared joint first position with Meols Cop Station near Southport.
Voluntary members of The Friends of Bentham Station (FOBS), who have spent the last two years improving the station with flower beds, tubs and artwork, have also been recognised for their ongoing work at this year’s Community Rail Awards.
Gerald Townson was awarded first place in the Outstanding Volunteer Contribution category for his work as chairman of FOBS, general secretary of the Lancaster and Skipton Rail User Group, as a director of station developments of the Leeds-Lancaster-Morecambe Community Rail Partnership and for the promotion of the Bentham Line and rail travel within the local communities.
A second place was awarded to FOBS for its “Informs” project, which included the development of its website (www.friendsofbenthamstation.btck.co.uk), the incorporation of QR (quick response) codes in literature, posters and station plaques.
Mr Townson said: “We would like to further encourage community involvement – there is a current government initiative on “Empowering Communities” and the formation of friends groups at our other designated stations on the Bentham Line; namely, Heysham Port, Morecambe, Bare Lane, Wennington, Clapham, Giggleswick, Long Preston, Hellifield, Gargrave and Skipton.”
