AROUND 36,000 homes and businesses in Lancaster and Morecambe will next year get access to superfast broadband.
Under BT’s new £2.5billion Openreach programme, fibres going directly to homes and businesses will offer speeds of up to 100 Mbps (megabytes per second).
Fibres delivered to street cabinets could reach a lightning-quick 80 Mbps (megabytes per second), with upstream speeds of up to 20 Mbps.
That is double the speed currently available using the same technology.
Around 20,000 properties in Lancaster and 16,000 in Morecambe could benefit from the higher speeds.
A BT spokeswoman said no plans had been announced yet for Heysham or Carnforth, but the technology is likely to be available to two-thirds of UK homes and businesses by the end of 2015.
