Brewery wants to keep pigs

PIGS, chickens and bees could be kept at Lancaster Brewery’s new premises – to be turned into food for hungry visitors.
The venture is one of several eco-friendly measures planned at the brewery site on Lancaster Leisure Park, off Wyresdale Road, which was this week officially opened after the company’s move from Lansil Industrial Estate last September.
Other plans include the installation of an anaerobic digestive system to convert waste into energy, solar panels, and investigative work to see if fresh water can be obtained from the site of an old well.
At Monday’s opening, brewery bosses also announced a deal to double exports to the United States to half a million bottles of cask ales and cider a year, across 42 states.
Smaller 330ml bottles will now be sold in six-packs in the US, after research suggested this would be more profitable than selling only 500ml bottles.
When the brewery opened in May 2005, it produced 3,500 pints a week.
But that has now soared to 35,000 pints – more than 1.8m pints a year – and it hopes to double that over the next two years.
The plans to rear animals on site – which have been submitted to Lancaster City Council – include a coop to hold 20 chickens on top of a sty to house two pigs. There would also be two beehives.
