Boarding at Lancaster Royal Grammar School has just received a rigorous, zero-notice inspection by Ofsted and been rated as ‘outstanding’ across all categories.
One of the particular strengths highlighted was the ‘warm homely environment’ in the boarding houses, in which pupils form strong friendships.
After the three-day inspection, the state boarding school was rated ‘outstanding’ overall and ‘outstanding’ across all four categories: Outcomes for Boarders, Quality of Boarding Provision and Care, Boarders’ Safety and Leadership and Management of Boarding.
The report highlights the boarding pupils’ very strong affiliation to the school.

The report praised the school for its inclusivity, whereby boarders’ individual differences are accepted and valued.
The philosophy of the school shows ‘a great deal of empathy towards pupils’ and staff are praised for the careful support they offer boys as they get accustomed to living away from home.
At the same time, staff have ‘consistently high aspirations’ for boarding pupils and ‘work extremely hard to ensure that young people achieve their full potential’.
The positive relationship between staff and pupils was highlighted: ‘Boarding pupils feel valued, safe and protected and this significantly increases their confidence and self-esteem’.
Meanwhile, the clear structure and routines were praised, and it was noted that ‘boundaries and expectations of behaviour are well established’ and that the boarders live ‘in a well-ordered community, displaying exemplary behaviour’.
The report concludes: ‘The boarding community remains at the heart of the school’.

“There can be few schools which have such an outstanding and committed team of staff involved in boarding, providing remarkable support and opportunities for our pupils.
