TWO benches removed from Lancaster city centre following anti-social behaviour and drinking among youths were due to be replaced today, following anger from pensioners and disabled people.
Following a request by police, Lancaster City Council removed the benches from near the Cheapside entrance to St Nicholas Arcades for a three-month trial period last October, after complaints about the antics of youths around them.
The council said the aim had been to establish whether the removal of the benches would discourage anti-social behaviour.
Police said their removal had reduced complaints about anti-social behaviour, and after initially indicating they did not want them reinstated, last week said the benches would not be returned until after “a full review.”
