Anger at Bonfire Night bans

COUNCIL chiefs have been labelled “killjoys” after banning revellers watching this weekend’s Fireworks Spectacular from setting off fireworks, using sparklers and enjoying a drink.

Locals on St George’s Quay say all those things have been part of their Bonfire Night celebrations on Quay Meadow for years, but Lancaster City Council has banned them after designating the site as an official viewing area.

The move comes after it last year banned crowds from watching the fireworks display from Castle Hill on health and safety grounds.

Surveys carried out by the council following the event showed only 47 per cent of people who responded were positive about it.

Quay Meadow proved popular, however, and has therefore been added to the list of official viewing areas for this year’s event on Saturday, November 5.
