Kirkby scored a try in the opening minutes when stand off Dave Barton broke through, took the ball up and cut out the last defender with a pass to centre Harry Ralston who scampered in, although the conversion was missed.

The good start was followed by a period of pressure in the Kersal twenty two and complemented by an unconverted try from right wing Harry Huddleston to make it 10-0.

Kersal hit back with a spell in Kirkby territory but although they came close they couldn’t get the ball over the line and eventually settled for a penalty when Kirkby didn’t roll away in the tackle.

The ten point margin was restored when Kirkby full back Ryan Terry was on target with a penalty to make it 13-3 but Kirkby were almost immediately undone by an unconverted try from the home side when they ran from outside the Kirkby twenty two.

With half time approaching Kersal were penalised, Walker tapped and went and was over for the third try, Terry’s conversion hit the post and stayed out but the visitors went into the break 18-8 ahead.

Kirkby stand-off Barton had the first shout in the second half when he bullocked through in typically muscular fashion for the bonus point fourth try and, inspired by this, Terry nailed the conversion to extend the lead to 25-8.

Kirkby then went further ahead from a scrum around ten metres into the Kersal half and towards the left touchline.

Dummy runners drew defenders in-field but Kirkby switched play to the short side and attacked down the left wing, Martyn Knapton handing off a defender to score in the corner, Terry making the difficult conversion to put Kirkby 32-8 up.

Kersal did have their moments in the second half but it was Kirkby who scored the next try – from an attack that Kersal bundled into touch Kirkby nicked their throw, the ball was moved in-field to Ross Towers who battled through a couple of tackles to score under the posts, Terry’s conversion extending the lead to 39-8.

In the last 10 minutes right wing Huddleston spun round and beat two men to score in the corner, Terry again kicking the difficult conversion before Kersal scored an unconverted try late on.
