The flight tower, called Gravity, has been placed at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre and will be an adventure facility for adrenalin enthusiasts.

Gravity is a multi-level outdoor tower which will test the nerves of climbers and encourage them to leap from the apex ‘The Drop.’

There are various ways of descent including abseil, zip-line or free fall.

The nine tonne steel structure has been installed by Hangfast, an adventure construction company.

The structure forms part of the centre’s £5m regeneration via Lancaster City Council.

“Being a UK first, the installation of this magnificent piece of equipment is a significant coup for the Lancaster district,” said Coun Darren Clifford, responsible for tourism and leisure at Lancaster City Council.

“It is anticipated to attract more than 8,000 visitors from far and wide to the centre each year.”

Founder and director of Hangfast, John Beers said: “The Flight Tower is a significant development in adventure play and brings something entirely new to the market.

“For the first time ever, adrenalin fanatics will have the opportunity to experience the feeling of a free fall from a moderate yet still incredibly nerve-testing height.”

The installation, which is anticipated to take four weeks to complete, is the latest development in the regeneration scheme.

More updates on its progress to come.
