THERE were more than 40 shields paraded around Slyne at Saturday's May Fair.
Also in the parade were BayBeat who added colour, pace and vibrancy to the parade. It was apparent to all the bystanders that much care, attention and effort had gone into the creation of these.

Despite all this talent there were a mere two accolades; the Beavers won the best group shield while Tess and Lily Cooper had the best individual shield.

When the shield parade reached the Memorial Hall, the May Fair started. Not only was there music from BayBeat but also from Rockit88 and St Luke's Primary School choir.

There was a tug of war and maypole dancing. There were stalls selling home baking, the horticultural society selling plants, a barbecue, an ice cream stall, sweets for sale and cream teas in the supper room of the Memorial Hall.

There was a plethora of side shows and this included a competition to bang a nail into a tree trunk in the least number of blows.

There were three categories; ladies won by Mrs Seed, men won by John Hayhurst and child won by Louis Lemasuier.

Most of the village societies and clubs participated in the May Fair and contributed to its success. However, there is a general consensus that the committee that organises the event deserves recognition for initiative and perseverance that ensured that both the procession and the May Fair were a success.
