Promenade theatre – a life in the great outdoors

MUCKING out pigs wasn’t the most auspicious way to begin a career in which outdoor theatre was to play a major role.

But that’s what faced 19-year-old Joe Sumsion when he was assistant stage manager for The Dukes’ 1988 production of As You Like It in Williamson Park.

“Working on those early shows was fantastic,” said Joe, now The Dukes director.

“It was exhilarating as you didn’t know what the job was going to entail. There was a real sense of adventure about it.”

Joe also crewed on Treasure Island in 1991, when he rowed a boat full of youth theatre actors across the lake. One of them was Cherylee Houston, who now plays Izzy Armstong in Coronation Street.
