REVIEW, The Moscow State Circus, Ryelands Park

NEVER having been to a circus before I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

But I was brought up watching 1940s circus movies with Burt Lancaster looking splendid on the trapeze and Charlton Heston trying to save the Big Top, so I had high hopes.

And you know what? I really enjoyed the show in Ryelands Park last week.

There were jugglers, arobats, clowns...with the show loosely based around the theme of Rasputin. Most of the outfits were a bit haphazard and all the entertainers did at least two acts. Some of them were genuiniely thrilling.

One couple Alexander and Yulia did a show called Statues, where, both dressed in gold, they moved together revealing an amazing show of strength.

One of the clowns, Valery Kashin, was less a clown than a comic from the age of silent movies. Think Buster Keaton and you'll get the picture.

And perhaps the highlight for me was the Sky Wheel where a troupe of young men were running around the outside of huge wheels positioned at least 40 feet above the ground. That one definitely had the crowd gasping.

The circus was in Lancaster from Wednesday to Sunday last week and on the Thursday night I was there every seat was full. It may have been my first time at the circus but it definitely won't be my last.

I would recommend giving The Moscow State Circus a try when they're next in the city.
