REVIEW: Circus Ronaldo - Circenses, Kendal

IF you attended Circus Ronaldo over the Bank Holiday weekend and expected top quality circus entertainment you may have been disappointed. If you went along hoping for a night of fantastic theatre, then that is exactly what you got.

The contemporary circus company has cleverly turned the world of small circuses travelling the world ekeing out a living into wonderful theatre.

The audience was divided into two groups. In the first half I was ushered into the rear of the Big Top and we sat backstage watching all the many antics of the performers as they tried to keep the show on the road.

Every now and then performers would walk through the red curtain to entertain the audience sitting watching the official show. But all of us sitting backstage knew exactly what had happened in the moments beforehand....we were in on the secret.

In the second half the audience changed places. As I watched the show from the front, it was a case of trying to piece together what had happened backstage before and after the individual acts.

It was a great, riotous piece of theatre.

On all the publicity for the show it had said suitable for those aged 14 upwards but many people had taken children much younger. This was a witty and sophisticated piece of entertainment where the parents probably drew far more enjoyment out of it than the children who attended.

It was Circus Ronaldo's premiere in the UK as part of Kendal's Minfest event. If they return to the north west, I recommend you try to catch them.
