Ornithologists at the Lancashire Wildlife Trust's Heysham Nature Reserve had quite a shock when they discovered an unexpected bird at the site.
Volunteers were monitoring migrating birds on the reserve when they found a white-throated sparrow, a North American vagrant and the first of its species to ever be seen in the county.

The mega-rare songbird was caught in a mist net and ringed by highly qualified volunteers.

A conspicuous white throat patch gives the bird its name.
