FOUR local heroes were rewarded for their hard work in the community in the New Year Honours List.
Garstang Fairtrade pioneer Bruce Crowther was awarded an MBE for services to Oxfam and to Fairtrade.

It is the latest accolade for the part-time vet, whose efforts have seen the Fairtrade town movement spread around the globe since Garstang declared itself the world's first Fairtrade town in 2000.

Mr Crowther is the founder of the Garstang Oxfam Group and has been a Fairtrader for 14 years.

He said: "I'm just one of millions of people who care about the poverty and inequality that underlies most, if not all that is wrong in our unjust world.

"I hope by accepting this award on behalf of this mass movement of people it will help to promote even greater awareness of poverty and the part we all play in it."

Milnthorpe man Geoff Ling was awarded the MBE for his public and volunteer service.

Mr Ling is semi-retired and works part-time as an executive officer for the Office of Pensions, Disability and Carers' Service for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), based at Mitre House in Lancaster.

He spent 27 years in the Terratorial Army, becoming a sergeant major.

In addition, the 60-year-old has also represented colleagues in the trade union and raised money for charities through his work social club. He was nominated by his manager at the DWP.

Mr Ling, who is married to Kate and has a daughter Joanne and son Steven, was surprised to receive the letter about his award.

"It came from the cabinet office which also deals with my work pension so I thought it was about that," he said.

"It was very nice to be recognised for everything I've done.

"I've had a lot of calls from friends and family, who are all very pleased and proud."

Pianist Renna Kellaway was awarded an MBE for services to music.

Miss Kellaway founded the Lake District Summer Music festival 25 years ago, and is artistic director.

The 17-day festival and summer school, which is held in August, attracts students from all over the world and runs more than 50 events throughout Cumbria.

"I am terribly grateful to everyone involved in the festival, and feel this is an honour for them as well," she said.

"It is a wonderful recognition for many people."

Miss Kellaway previously worked at the Royal Northern College of Music, and has also worked across the world giving masterclasses and sitting on juries for piano competitions.

Miss Kellaway, who lives in High Bentham, is married to Sir John Manduell CBE, a composer who was the first director of music at Lancaster University and the first principal of the Royal Northern College of Music. The couple have four adult children.

Ingleton district councillor Carl Lis received an OBE for services to the community in the Yorkshire Dales.

Coun Lis, who has a wife Sue and two daughters, Jayne and Amy, represents the Ingleton and Clapham ward, which covers the parishes of Austwick, Clapham-cum-Newby, Ingleton, Lawkland and Thornton-in-Lonsdale.

He is also chairman of Ingleton Rural Community Association, chairman of Ingleton FC, chairman of Ingleton Scouts and and a past chairman of North Yorkshire National Parks Association,

"People have been very complimentary," he said. "It really is an honour.

"The award is for my family as much as me, for putting up with everything that I do."

Meanwhile, Lancaster University's Pro-Chancellor since 2003, Bryan Gray, was appointed a CBE.
