LANCASTRIANS joined in a world day of action protesting at the violence inflicted on the people of Gaza and Lebanon.
Around 30 Lancaster people took part in a "die-in" in Market Square on Saturday, to draw attention to the civilians' plight.
Seven of those protesting lay motionless on the ground, covered in red splattered white garments, while other people held ba
nners.
Two hundred leaflets were given out to passers-by, many of whom stood silently watching the scene, and expressing their sympathy for the victims of this violence.
The demonstration reflected the range of people living in Lancaster, bringing together Jews and Muslims, Israelis and Palestinians, people with young children, older people, teachers and young activists.
Judith Keshet, an Israeli living in Lancaster said: "There is a groundswell of opposition to what is happening. It is encouraging that so many demonstrations took place simultaneously across the world, including 5,000 people in Tel Aviv.
"The demonstrations are important to keep the issue on the agenda."
Alys Jenkins from Lancaster, who recently returned from solidarity work in the West Bank said: "There are extremely alarming reports emerging from the hospitals in Gaza and Lebanon, which very strongly indicate that Israel has been using chemical weapons. This is a disgusting abuse of human rights.
"I personally worked with many Palestinians who had been tortured by the Israeli state and army."
