Despite a poor weather forecast nine members turned up at Beaumont for Matt & Mary Hodges' Cyclists' Touring Club ride. Avoiding last week's route they headed up Kellet Lane past the television tower, its top hidden in the low cloud.
After passing through Nether Kellet they took an unusual route through Swarthdale to join the Carnforth to Kirkby Lonsdale road near the Redwell Fishing Lake, to press on under heavy cloud through Arkholme and Whittington, to the coffee stop in Kirk
by Lonsdale. Here they were joined by several more members but when the time came to leave the heavens had opened and half the group decided to curtail the outing and head for home via Biggins and Burton in Kendal.

The leaders took a consequently reduced party down to Devil's Bridge and up the steep lanes to High Casterton before joining the Roman Road as far as the A65, which they followed to Cowan Bridge. Here the cyclists turned again onto quiet lanes through Leck to Ireby, the planned destination. However with the rain still falling and no shelter for a picnic lunch the riders continued first to Burton in Lonsdale - the other Burton, then still on quiet lanes through Lower Westhouse and Thornton in Lonsdale to Ingleton. By now the rain had stopped and they were tempted into a café by the promise of a hot meal and the chance to dry out. When the cyclists emerged the sun was shining and they made the most of it by bowling along the ridge between the Greta and Wenning valleys before sweeping down to Wray for tea at Ski the Edge headquarters, with a visit to the Scarecrows before the final return home along the Lune valley and cyclepath.

Next Sunday's CTC ride will follow part of the TT course, though at a more conservative speed, as twenty members set off to the Isle of Man for a few days. The following Sunday, 11th May, Nick Hall will lead the CTC ride to Slaidburn, starting from the Boot & Shoe at 9:15am, coffee at Dunsop Bridge.
