Lowgill Sheepdog Trials

BOB Taylor, president of Lowgill sports and sheepdog trials, opened the event on Saturday, a beautiful hot summer's day.

A keen supporter, he has served on the committee for half a century. He thanked members for inviting him to be president saying that this traditional sports has been going for more than 100 years and he hopes it will continue for another hundred.

Throughout the day, the president presented cups to Frank Cleary, winner of the sheepdog trials with his dog Peg; to Edward Huddleston, winner of the quoits; to Isabelle, Thomas, Jack and Meg Woodhouse, winner of the fancy dress as pirates of Lowgill; and to Rachel Harrison for handwriting.

He also presented trophies to all seven players of the winning football teams and shields to Will Huddleston and Danielle Harrison, winners of the children's fell race.

There were side shows, a raffle and competitions, a bouncy castle, refreshments and a barbecue on the field.

Fancy dress winners were: under five: Isabelle, Thomas, Jack and Meg Woodhouse (pirates of Lowgill); five to eight: Joseph and Frankie Ibbetson (eagle owls); eight to 11: Jack Woodhouse (eagle owl). All non-winners were given a prize for entering.

Handwriting winners were: reception: Madonna Buss; year one: Mia Seddon; year 2: Harry Bradley; year three: Iona Lane; year four: Oliver Bradley; year five: (and cup) Rachel Harrison; year six: Harry Furniss.

This was the first time Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling has been held at Lowgill and the winners were: under 12: Darrel Hodgson; under 15: Scott Brocklebank; under 18: Graham Brocklebank; 12½ stone: Graham Brocklebank; all weights: Thomas Brocklebank; girls: Joyce Hodgson.

In the sheepdog trials, the judge was Phil Rigby. Some 53 dogs ran with Frank Cleary and his dog Peg winning with 82 points.
