Anyone who's mad about musicals is usually glued to the television on a Saturday night.
So no doubt there was a bit of recording going on back home while the audience was watching the latest musicals compilation show to call in at the Grand.

Mad About The Musicals did what it said on the tin - bringing together a professional company to perform as many songs from the shows as they could fit into a little over two hours.

This production was loosely based around the 25-year career of its star performer and producer, Michael Courtney whose love of the musicals began when he saw Tommy Steele and Roy Castle in a version of Singing in the Rain.

But when I say loosely based, that's what I mean, for though Michael announced this theme early on, it was then virtually forgotten and my only criticism of the show - apart from the recorded backing track which I always find rather cheesy - was that it jumped around too much.

Nowhere was this more apparent than after Michael's wonderful rendition of Gethsemene from Jesus Christ Superstar - one of the most moving songs in any musical - closely followed by Be A Clown. I've heard of comic relief but this was inappropriate and spoilt the moment for me.

That apart though, this show was very enjoyable to fans of musicals, of which there are many if the numbers in the audience was any measure and all the five-strong company gave impressive performances, especially Kyia Grandi.

I'd do anything to have voices like them. Their harmonies alone were well worth missing Saturday night telly for.
